What we’ve been up to…

August 2021

A NEW SEASON:This past year has been full of changes for us as a family. After selling our farm, we relocated to Port Elizabeth at Easter, and have spent the last 4 months settling into our new home. This has been quite a process, as furniture, animals, plants and endless boxes have been moved, unpacked, rearranged, and sometimes given to new owners to be loved and cherished.
Not all the boxes are unpacked, but one of the first things we did was to customise a room specifically to produce Rachel’s Garden products!
It has been fun and exciting to move into this new space, and we are finally ready to get back into production.
We have not yet found the right outlet in PE, but products can be collected from our home in Walmer or delivered where possible.
We still supply the Graaff-Reinet community with a selection of Healing Hand Creams, Lip Balm, Cuticle Oil, and Deodorants, now available from THE SLOWMADE COLLECTIVE in Queens Street. Watch this space for new developments!

Picking Spekboom slips on our
Karoo Farm for propagation in
our new “city” home.

Enjoying a cappuccino and adapting to “city” life at a well know PE Nursery, where I will be purchasing many plants from now on.

Lavender, rosemary and violets are some of the plants I was able to bring in pots from the Farm for making Rachel’s Garden Products.

GOING GREENAt Rachel’s Garden, we only use NATURAL PRODUCTS, many of which I grow here in my Karoo farm garden, in spite of the occasional raid by our prize bull! SPINACH is one of them! Don’t underestimate the power of the green leaf in beauty products.COLOURANT: As I don’t use any artificial colourants, spinach is the perfect green colourant, which I use for my handmade soaps. After picking the leaves, I chop and cook them. I then allow the mixture to dry in the Karoo sun before grinding it into a powder and adding it to my hand-made beauty soaps.HEALING PROPERTIES:We all know spinach is good for us, and the best way to have spinach is by including it in your daily diet or your morning smoothie. But, for those who don’t enjoy the taste, the good news is that it also works from the outside. When it comes to the skin, spinach contains retinol and is a source of vitamins A, C, E, and K—which work together to help your skin enhance its radiance, heal from scars or sun damage, and fortify its natural barrier. It is also known to reverse pollution damage and is particularly great for dry skin.So next time you take a bath or have a shower, GO GREEN!
