Essential Oils

This rose-scented oil is extremely useful as it balances the natural oils in the skin. This means that it can be used to reduce dryness or oiliness, or both conditions, as when someone has a combination skin. Therapeutically, it is very helpful in treating PMS, depression, stress, anxiety, and tension.

This oil is most well-known for it’s calming, sedative properties. Less well-known is the fact that it is an excellent promoter of skin healing, and can be applied to burns, cuts and bites as well as pimples and acne. As a painkiller, it is useful in massage treatments for easing pain and discomfort. Being such an all-round wonder oil, I use lavender in many of the preparations.

This highly antiseptic oil is most useful for decongesting blocked noses and easing tight chests, but is also a painkiller. I use it in preparations for flu and sinus as well as sore muscles, where it is most effective. As it has a very medicinal scent, it is usually only in the Nature’s Pharmacy preparations. It should not be used in conjunction with homeopathic remedies.

This is the most powerful antiseptic and anti-fungal essential oil and is ideal for reducing skin infections, combating germs and promoting healing. I use it extensively to treat colds and flu as well as pimples and mild acne. However, it is a very strong oil so I use it sparingly. Some people are allergic to tea tree, so please read ingredient labels carefully if you know you are one of them.

This is without a doubt the “Queen” of all essential oils in terms of scent. Unfortunately, it is too costly to import, and so we have to use a blend of other essential oils to make the characteristic fragrance of the rose. This means that although it does not impart the skin-enhancing qualities of true rose essential oil, it is still able to elicit the aromatherapy benefits of calming and balancing the emotions. When combined with other essential oils, the effects are outstanding. It is my dream to make my own rose essential oil in spring/summer 2020.

This oil has been used since antiquity in the form of a resin which was burnt on altars and in temples. It slows down breathing and promotes deeper breathing, with the result of calming anxious hearts. It is also used in perfumes, and as one of the most expensive oils it is fortunate that it has a long-lasting scent. It is invaluable in facial skincare preparations as it is excellent for tightening skin which has begun to sag, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

This essential oil is a good antiseptic and is particularly useful for treating acne and greasy skin and hair. In addition, it is helpful when trying to reduce the appearance of dark marks left by over-exposure to the sun and blemishes. When applied as a massage oil, it helps to ease arthritis and is a good tonic for general well-being.

This fresh-smelling oil creates a relaxed and happy feeling, and is very useful for treating stress and tension. It is often described as being “uplifting”, and this is a perfect description of its’ effect. It is the scent behind Earl Grey tea, which many people enjoy. As it is a good antiseptic and has such a wonderful fragrance, it is also a good choice for treating acne and generally oily skin.

This citrus oil is most beneficial for relaxing and calming stressed and tense individuals. In skincare it is wonderful for rejuvenating dry and sensitive skins, promoting smoothness, and healing broken capillaries, resulting in younger-looking skin. It is also helpful in reducing stretch marks. As it combines very well with other floral oils, I have used it in perfumes as well as skin creams.

This oil has, without a doubt, the best antidepressant properties of all the essential oils. Somehow the scent reminds one of happy summer days, and the term “Sunshine in a bottle” perfectly describes the images that using this oil brings to mind. Ideal for lifting the spirits on cold winter days or just if you’re feeling down, it is also good for reducing insomnia and helping you get a good night’s sleep.

This oil has a bright, fresh scent and is a great antidepressant, lifting the spirits on even the dullest of days. It combines well with the other citrus oils as well as the florals and I use it in several handcreams and perfumes. In skincare, its’ antiseptic properties are most useful for toning the skin and treating oiliness and acne.

This beautiful oil has a calming effect, helping with anxiety and tension and can be used to lift depression and shock. Like rose geranium, it balances the oils in both dry and oily skins and so can be used on all skin types. It combines well with other floral oils and is so useful for making creams to suit all ages and several different functions, such as massage candles and perfumes.

Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils and “carry” them to your skin. Most are unscented and don’t interfere with an essential oil’s therapeutic properties.

This is non-greasy and easily absorbed oil, protecting the surface of the skin, making it smoother and softener. It relieves muscular aches and pains.
